Williston Transporter Vessel Case Study

Williston Transporter Vessel Case Study

Challenge:

Active 24/7, 10 months a year, the logging operations in Mackenzie, BC needed a true broadband solution for communication between sites and the ship on Williston Lake.

Solution:

Using Intellian’s next generation VSAT platform, the v100Ka, Galaxy was able to connect the ship to our Ka Band MCPC network, giving them a true broadband experience at 20Mbps bursting speeds.

Result:

The dish is fully operational and making communication faster and easier than ever! Everyone on board the ship now has access to a true broadband experience.

Galaxy and one of their resellers were approached by Canfor logging operations to provide a satellite solution including data and voice lines for their logging ship centered around Williston Lake in Mackenzie, British Columbia.

Galaxy approached Intellian, one of the world’s leaders in marine and antenna products, to integrate with setting up the first KA Band marine system in North America.

Using the SkyCarrier Network, Galaxy is able to offer 20Mbps bursting speeds and multiple VoIP over satellite phone lines aboard the vessel. The Intellian v100Ka 1m VSAT Platform, which is one of the world’s most accurate tracking Ka marine systems, was selected.

About the Ship: Canfor’s ice-breaking log-carrying vessel – MV Williston Transporter. The ice-breaker is a 360-foot long, 110-foot wide vessel capable of carrying a 5,000 tonne payload. It travels to the different harvest sites and transports logs a distance of 65km across Williston Lake. This process takes 4.5 hours one way during the summer, and 6 hours during the winter.
